An onscreen marking system is software that replaces physical answer sheet checking with digital evaluation. Physical answer sheets are masked for anonymity, scanned on high-speed scanners and uploaded to a secure cloud platform, where examiners log in from any location and mark them using digital annotation tools. Scores are calculated instantly, moderation is automated, and mark sheets are generated without manual tabulation. Eklavvya's onscreen marking system reduces answer sheet evaluation time by around 60% and speeds up result processing by over 80%.
OSM answer sheet checking works in five stages. First, answer sheets are collected and student details are masked so that evaluation stays anonymous. Second, the sheets are scanned on high-speed scanners and uploaded securely to the cloud. Third, scripts are allocated to examiners according to paper type and examiner role. Fourth, examiners evaluate remotely using digital marking and annotation tools, while administrators track progress in real time on an online dashboard. Fifth, marks are tabulated automatically, moderated and released as final results. Because examiners do not travel and answer sheets are not shipped, institutions remove travel and logistics cost entirely, and several Eklavvya customers publish results within eight days of the examination.
In practice the two terms describe the same process and are used interchangeably in Indian examination administration. Onscreen marking, often shortened to OSM, is the more common term among universities and government examination boards, while onscreen evaluation is used more widely in schools and higher education institutions. Both mean evaluating scanned answer sheets on screen instead of on paper.
