Introduction
Viva exams are commonly utilized in the academic examination process for various purposes, such as end-of-semester exams, tutorials, or subject matter expert evaluations.
These exams typically require manual administration and the presence of an examiner to listen to students’ responses.
However, with the aid of technology, we can now scale up the entire process, allowing students to record their answers from any location for examiners to evaluate at a later time.
Thus, scalability can be achieved in the case of Viva exams. Let us delve into how this can be accomplished in a cost-effective manner.
Are you looking for simple ways to conduct viva online?
Do your students need an answer on oral exams remotely? Now, it’s possible with our service that allows them the convenience of taking viva tests from home or anywhere else with security!
The Eklavvya platform has been used by many educational institutes and universities to conduct proctored exams remotely. We have recently launched a feature where you can conduct viva online. Students can appear for the viva using a desktop/ laptop or even a mobile phone.
You can define the Viva exam online and ask students to appear for it online. Students can use their mobile + microphone to appear for the online exam. Question text associated with viva would be displayed on the screen where the candidate can speak about the answer. The entire speech is recorded in the system.
The examiner is provided with a login to listen to the audio and evaluate/ assign marks for each individual answer attempted by the student.

Recently we have conducted viva for one of the reputed universities of India. Students were able to attempt exams from their laptops/ mobile phones with limited internet speed. Entire viva answers were recorded in the system for each individual student.
For assigning the marks we have a section where you can assign marks even in fractions

You can also define a model answer which would be visible to the examiner during the evaluation of a particular answer with audio. The examiner gets a Dashboard to see the current status of the evaluation process for audio-based exam/ viva.

Ways to convert Practical Exam into Viva Exam
There is a way to conduct your practical exams. You can ask the student to see a particular image/ video/ text. You can ask students to explain a particular diagram or steps related to practical exams.
Students can explain it and the system would record that answer in the form of a voice.
The entire voice associated with particular practical steps explained by the student would be recorded in the system. Students can view particular audio or video and answer the question by speaking.
It works on a minimum internet speed (less than 1 MBPS). Any remote student would be able to attempt the online practice exam.
AI Voice Assessment
Traditionally, conducting a VIVA required an examiner to assess each candidate’s responses in person, making the process time-consuming and resource-intensive. It also placed a significant workload on evaluators, especially when dealing with large numbers of students. However, advancements in AI technology are now changing the game, making automated voice assessments not just possible, but incredibly efficient and accurate.
A Smarter Way to Conduct VIVA
With AI voice assessments, candidates can record their answers online from anywhere, eliminating the need for in-person sessions. These recorded responses are processed by advanced AI algorithms and evaluated using large language models. These models are designed to understand the nuances of speech, analyze the content of the answers, and assess the candidate’s overall performance.
Accurate and Automated Evaluation
The AI system doesn’t just evaluate; it assigns precise marks or ratings to each response based on pre-defined criteria. This ensures a level of accuracy and consistency that manual evaluations often struggle to achieve. By automating the process, institutions can conduct VIVA sessions for thousands of students with minimal effort, ensuring every candidate is assessed fairly and objectively.
Benefits of AI-Powered VIVA
- Efficiency: AI enables institutions to scale their VIVA process, handling large volumes of students without compromising on quality or speed.
- Accuracy: The advanced algorithms and language models used by AI ensure evaluations are precise and unbiased.
- Flexibility: Students can record their answers remotely, offering greater convenience for both candidates and examiners.
- Detailed Feedback: Beyond just assigning marks, AI can provide insightful feedback, helping students understand their strengths and areas for improvement.
- Scalability: Whether it’s a class of 50 or a university-wide assessment involving thousands of candidates, AI can handle it seamlessly.
The Future of VIVA Assessments
AI voice assessments are not just a technological innovation—they are a leap forward in making education more accessible, efficient, and fair. By automating the evaluation process, educational institutions can focus on other critical aspects of learning while ensuring that students are assessed with the utmost precision.
In an era where technology is transforming every aspect of education, AI-driven VIVA evaluations represent a smarter, faster, and more reliable way to measure student performance. It’s a solution that benefits both students and educators, paving the way for a more streamlined and effective assessment process.

Some challenges of conducting viva exams online include technical issues such as connectivity problems and network delays, as well as difficulties with assessing non-verbal cues and body language.
There may also be issues with examiners and examinees being in different time zones or locations and maintaining the same level of security and integrity as in-person exams.
To address these challenges, it is important to provide support and training to examiners and examinees on using online tools and systems and to have backup plans in place in case of technical issues.
It is also important to carefully plan and coordinate the exam schedule and to use tools and techniques such as recorded video or written responses to assess non-verbal cues and body language. By addressing these challenges and planning carefully, online viva exams can be conducted successfully and securely.
Conducting a viva exam using online tools has several benefits, including the ability to conduct the exam remotely, allowing for greater flexibility and convenience.
It can also provide opportunities for collaboration and engagement, as the online platform can offer tools such as virtual whiteboards and screen sharing.
Additionally, online viva exams can be recorded and archived for future reference, providing a valuable resource for the candidate and examiners.
