Every controller of examination knows the drill. A hall plan drawn on graph paper, roll numbers typed into a spreadsheet, and one nagging question the night before: did anyone writing the same paper end up sitting side by side? This tool answers that question deterministically. It fills each hall so no adjacent seat carries the same subject code, verifies the finished plan seat by seat, and prints the exact number of remaining conflicts — including zero, which is what a well-sized hall should return.
Why manual seating charts break
Two candidates writing the same paper next to each other is the single most common audit finding in a malpractice enquiry. It is also the easiest mistake to make by hand, because the constraint is two-dimensional: a plan that looks correct scanning across a row can still be wrong scanning down a column. Spreadsheets do not check the seat behind. This tool checks all four neighbours, or all eight if you turn on diagonal spacing.
When a clash-free plan is impossible — and why we say so
Sometimes no arrangement can work, and pretending otherwise wastes your morning. If one subject makes up more than half your candidates, 4-way spacing cannot be satisfied in a packed hall no matter how the seats are shuffled. Under 8-way spacing you need at least four subjects in the room. The tool works this out before it allocates and tells you exactly which subject is over the limit and by how many candidates, so you can add a hall or split the sitting rather than hunt for a plan that does not exist.
Paste candidates as roll | name | subject. The subject code is what drives the spacing rule — students of different subjects may sit together.
List your halls with rows and columns, or a bare capacity. Mark broken or reserved seats so they stay empty and are never counted as neighbours.

How does it stop students of the same subject sitting together?
The allocator treats each subject or course code as a colour and fills the hall so that no adjacent seat carries the same one. Choose 4-way spacing to check the seats in front, behind, left and right, or 8-way to include the four diagonals as well. Every placement is checked again after the plan is built, and the conflict count you see is the verified number, not an estimate.
Can it allocate candidates across several halls?
Yes. List each hall on its own line with its rows and columns, or just its capacity. Candidates fill the halls in the order you list them, and every hall gets its own seat map and roll chart. There is no limit on the number of halls in the free plan.
What if a hall has broken, reserved or blocked seats?
Add the seat coordinates as a fourth field on the hall line, for example Hall A | 6 | 8 | 1-1, 3-4. Those seats are left empty, excluded from the hall's capacity and never counted as neighbours.
Is my candidate data uploaded anywhere?
No. The whole allocation runs inside your browser. Roll numbers, candidate names and subject codes never leave your device and are never sent to Eklavvya or stored on any server.
